UC’s growing resources for first-generation students

Nearly one in five UC students are considered first-generation college students — meaning they and their siblings are the first in their family to attend a four-year institution of higher learning. UC is attracting a growing number of first-gen students; their numbers jumped by 8% this fall on campus.

UC graduate program showcase Nov. 16

Event: November 16, 2023 10:00 AM

UC students, faculty and staff and alumni are invited to Bearcats Beyond Bachelors, an event designed to showcase graduate programs at UC. The event is 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16, in TUC and will explore over 350 graduate degrees, certificates and professional programs across various disciplines.

It's also the theme of the "RetroFittings" fashion show, which charges UC design majors to repurpose thrifted items from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul charity stores into fashion statements. The annual show took place Oct. 19, 2023 at Cincinnati's Music Hall.

Students at UC's School of Design at DAAP learn the creative journey from design studio to the runway, and getting there is exhilarating says 2015 design grad Caitlin McCall. Currently working at Two Fish studios, a McCall design was featured at Omaha Fashion week 2023. McCall states that she wants her patterns to be accessible and will soon be offering them for free on open source platforms.

A UC research project out of the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP)’s grant accelerator program paired Bonansinga, a professor and director of DAAP’s School of Art, with Muhammad Rahman, an assistant professor of design, to research and develop a community enrichment program. The result: Step Up to Art, which recently completed a refresh on two City of Cincinnati public stairways.
