DAAP Spring 2021 Guidance for Students

  • Most DAAP class instruction will continue in online format for Spring Semester 2021. Always check Catalyst to confirm the mode of teaching for each course. 
  • The supervised “maker spaces” of DAAP (workshops, labs, and technology centers) will be available to those students who desire to use them in producing their work. These facilities will be available by appointment to DAAP students during the hours of 9am-4pm, M-F. The complete guidance on protocols for use of these spaces is posted at the bottom of this page under the "Access to the DAAP Building" topic. 
  • Studio spaces will be available to all DAAP students as "hot desks" (meaning these are shared spaces that can be used by a student by appointment at a specific time and then have to be completely cleared and vacated at the end of the use). 'Hot desk' studio space will be available by appointment to DAAP students during the hours of 9am-4pm, M-F. The complete guidance on protocols for use of these spaces is posted at the bottom of this page under the "Access to the DAAP Building" topic. 
  • Students enrolled in certain DAAP courses will have dedicated studio space. The list of those courses is posted at the bottom of this page under the "Access to the DAAP Building" topic.

DAAP has produced a collection of Frequently Asked Questions that are specific to our students' most common concerns. This list will continue to develop as new questions come in and new information is learned. Please check back for updates. 

DAAP student building access for Spring Semester 2021:

Beginning in Spring Semester 2021, student access to the DAAP building will be as described here to protect the health and safety of our learning community during the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • The DAAP buildings will be open to DAAP students Monday – Friday between 7:30am and 9:00pm. The exterior doors of DAAP will be locked and DAAP students must use their student IDs (i.e. Bearcat Card) to swipe-in to enter the building. Students may enter any exterior door that is equipped with a pad for ID-swipe entry and will no longer be required to check-in and check-out on the 3000 level

  • DAAP students may only access the building using their Student ID/Bearcat Card swipe on Monday-Friday between the hours indicated. Students will be required to vacate the building before 9:00pm. Student IDs will not work to unlock exterior doors outside of these hours. It is important that students do not prop open doors or open doors for other students to enter when the building is closed.  

  • All students will have access to ‘hot desk’ studios (the 5000 level studios as mentioned in the list that follows here), wireless hot spots and DAAP labs. 'Hot desks' are shared spaces that can be used by a student by appointment at a specific time and then have to be completely cleared and vacated at the end of the use. The spaces listed below will be open between the hours of 9:00am and 4:00pm and will require reservations to be made on the DAAP Concierge site on Canvas in order to ensure that a safe number of students is maintained within the spaces.

  • Students enrolled in the classes identified below will have access to assigned, dedicated studios in DAAP from Monday-Friday between 7:30am and 9:00pm. Your instructors will communicate directly with you about the specific studio space assignments and access, as well as the type and frequency of interactions that will occur in the studio space. All other classrooms spaces in DAAP will be locked and will not be accessible unless approval is acquired from School Directors


    School of Design

    • No other classes will meet in-person in studios or have designated studio space. Students who believe they require use of dedicated studio space should make this request to their class instructor and will require the approval of the School of Design Director.
       

    School of Architecture and Interior Design

    • No class sections will meet in-person in studios or have designated studio space. Students who believe they require use of dedicated studio space should make this request to their class instructor and will require the approval of the School of Architecture and Interior Design Director.
       

    School of Art 

    • FAA 5082 – All sections 
    • No other classes will meet in-person in studios or have designated studio space. Students who believe they require use of dedicated studio space should make this request to their class instructor and will require the approval of the School of Art Director.


    School of Planning 

    • No class sections will meet in-person in studios or have designated studio space. Students who believe they require use of dedicated studio space should make this request to their class instructor and will require the approval of the School of Planning Director.
       
  • The Reed Gallery and Myers Gallery will be open with no reservations required but will impose a maximum number of occupants that will be monitored by the staff in each gallery. Check the DAAP Galleries section of the DAAP web site for exhibits and hours. In addition, the student gallery Tabula Rasa will be open during the hours of 9am-4pm and will not require a reservation.

  • Students entering the DAAP building must adhere to all health and safety guidance from the University and all individuals that enter must wear a mask.

  • Students entering the DAAP building should use UCs COVID check app (https://www.uc.edu/publichealth/return-to-campus-guide/covid-check-app.html), perform Daily Health Checks and self-report if diagnosed with COVID-19. All students should monitor UC’s public health guidance for updates on policies and guidelines for the UC community: https://www.uc.edu/publichealth.html.

  • The DAAP program fees for Spring Semester 2021 will be standardized for all DAAP students to the base amount of $400, rather than the normal range of up to $750.
  • If you still have items in a locker or studio space from last Spring and would like to retrieve them, please make arrangements directly with Dan Dugan by emailing him at dan.dugan@uc.edu.
  • The DAAP Library will be opening next Monday, Feb. 1st  instead of this Monday. Our apologies. New carpeting is being installed and the project is taking longer than expected. Please contact me for any materials you may need. Some items are not available while new flooring is installed in the stacks (we will notify you if that is the case).

    However, M-F, 9am-4pm Click and Collect @ DAAP Library is available now.

    • Bring your Bearcat card to get into the DAAP Complex
    • Pick up requested items outside front doors of DAAP Library
    • When searching the UC Libraries Catalog, items with "Click & Collect" status are requestable
    • Contact library staff directly to request items with "Local Use Only" status

DAAP courses will be conducted mostly online for Spring Semester 2021. As such, please see the following resources to support students in their online coursework.

The DAAP computer lab (CGC) will be available to students by appointment between 9am and 4pm, Monday through Friday during Spring Semester 2021. 

For IT help, please try to utilize the UCIT support ticket system to make your request. The link to this is https://uc.edu/ithelp and a step by step set of instructions is included on the home page of the DAAP Concierge page which is in the list of your Canvas courses (for all DAAP students). Requests will be routed to the DAAP IT staff and they will respond as promptly as they can.

Accessing DAAP software remotely: 
If you need access to more powerful computing and/or access to the software that is on the computers in the DAAP labs, you can connect to a DAAP lab computer remotely by following the instructions below:

  • Select the Individual workstation you wish to connect to.  Download the rdp file and open it with Microsoft Remote Desktop.

This will open a remote connection to a one of the Windows workstations in DAAP Aronoff 4425E with all the software that the DAAP labs have. The computing power is substantial but the experience will be affected by network traffic and your internet connection. The more bandwidth being consumed, the “choppier” the response will be.


Students are encouraged to check their UC email, as well as Canvas, for more information and next steps from course instructors. Course content will now be deployed on these platforms. 


What if I don’t have a functioning computer to access the course materials?
There are a couple of options to assist:

  • UC IT is acquiring a limited number of laptops for faculty and students who do not have equipment to work remotely. The Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CET&L) will serve as the point for distribution. Please contact them at cetl@uc.edu.

  • In response to UC's suspension of face-to-face instruction, providing appropriate technology to all is imperative. The NEXT Apprenticeship Program will provide any student who does not have appropriate technology to complete their course work with laptop computers. Students will be able to check out these computers and utilize them during this time of need. Please know that this is open to ALL students and you do not need to be an IT or Tech major to take advantage of this program.
